East China’s Jiangsu province has started to reap rice as the autumn harvest is in full swing. Let’s take a close look.

Two combine harvesters were seen shuttling back and forth in Wuxi Taihu Lake Rice Demonstration Park where more than 30 new varieties of rice are grown every year. The yield per mu of new varieties of rice being harvested is expected to reach 1600 catties. The harvested rice is continuously sent to the grain drying center for drying. Six grain dryers in the park can dry 60 tons of rice every day.

Jiang Long, Deputy Director of the Production Service Center of Wuxi Taihu Lake Rice Demonstration Park, told the reporter that starting from rice seedling raising, they have fully covered the process of farming, management and collection by mechanization, and ensured unmanned operation in some aspects, including UAV plant protection and UAV fertilization.

Among the 637100 mu of rice sown in Wuxi this year, 80000 mu of rice has been harvested by machine and large area harvesting is expected to be completed by the middle of November.

Starting this week, Changzhou began to harvest autumn grain on a large scale. The 40000-mu paddy field in Zhiqian Town, Jintan District, Changzhou City, has achieved a heading rate of more than 90% due to good temperature and light conditions. Several large combine harvesters galloped back and forth in the farmland, collecting the good harvest grains of this season to the warehouse.

Ji Zhong, Deputy Director of Jintan District Planting Technology Promotion Center, Changzhou City, said that their rice output this year is expected to be between 650 and 680kg per mu, and the rice quality is expected to be higher than that in previous years.

This year Changzhou planted 969100 mu of autumn grain, an increase of 371000 mu over the previous year. At present, 30% of rice has been harvested. 10% of wheat and 50% of rape have been sown.

The purchase of autumn grain has got under way with the harvest of rice, corn and other autumn grain. 25 autumn grain purchasing sites in Shuyang County have started to purchase rice. In order to ensure the timely warehousing of autumn grain, the local grain department made preparations for the purchase in advance.

Zhang Jiesong, Manager of Shuyang Hudong Grain Storage and Marketing Co., Ltd., told the reporter that they settle the accounts in cash based on quality and price, and do not issue IOUs to ensure that farmers are carefree when selling rice.

Up to now, Jiangsu has harvested 50% of the autumn grain, 30% of the rice and the corn and soybean harvest has basically ended. The province has purchased more than 1.3 billion catties of rice in total.
