East China’s Jiangsu province has been commended by the State Council for its outstanding achievements in high-standard farmland construction, according to a circular issued recently by the General Office of the State Council on the allocation of financial funds by the central government.
In Sixun Village, Binhai County, the land was leveled two years ago to ensure that the entire village's arable land can be mechanized on a large scale.
The fields of nearly 400 mu were previously composed of more than 200 small plots with ridges crisscrossing each other.

Since the previous year, the Sixun Village Administration has mobilized the farmers to transfer the land in a centralized manner, and the village set up a company to level the land so as to ensure that the village's cultivated land unified to be conducive for the operation of large-scale agricultural machinery for farming, field management and harvesting while also expanding the area of arable land and boosting soil fertility.

Farmland construction can increase the area and yield per mu, and improve irrigation and drainage facilities to ensure drought and floods. In Tianganghu Township, Sihong County, most of the cultivated land are located in the hilly areas, making it difficult to irrigate in the dry season and difficult to drain water in the rainy season.
