Hot dry rock fracturing test launched in north Jiangsu

A fracturing test was launched on Wednesday in the hot dry rock development and utilization project Heat Energy Well No. 1 in Xinghua city, marking a big step forward in the province’s first comprehensive utilization test project of hot dry rock.

7 fracturing trucks were seen to be transporting high-pressure liquid downhole. The wellhead pressure has reached about 55 MPa and the downhole pressure at 4,700 meters has reached about 80 MPa. The high pressure fracturing the underground hot dry rock will facilitate the heat exchange of water in the later stage.

Hot dry rock is a clean, high-efficiency, green and environmentally friendly renewable energy source. It is a hot rock mass with no water or steam deep in the earth's crust and a temperature above 150 °C. 

Water is used as the medium in the development and utilization of hot dry rock resources to conduct sufficient heat exchange with the thermal reservoir.

At the beginning of 2021, Jiangsu discovered a carbonate rock thermal reservoir with a bottom hole temperature of 155°C, which confirmed for the first time that the North Jiangsu Basin is rich in hot dry rock resources, achieving a major breakthrough in the exploration of hot dry rock in Jiangsu.

The fracturing process will last for about 8 days. Through the fracturing test, a location with better development of downhole fissures will be found, and the second well and the first well will be drilled to form a pair of connected wells.

According to preliminary estimates, the reserves of hot dry rock resources in Taizhou are equivalent to 19.6 billion tons of standard coal. 

Heat Energy Well No. 1 will give full play to hot dry rock resources to implement heating and power supply, which will play a positive role in promoting "carbon peaking and carbon neutralization".
