Jiangsu revitalizes Grand Canal heritages through protection

East China’s Jiangsu province has strengthened the protection of the Grand Canal with a view to promoting the inheritance and utilization of the Grand Canal culture and build the Grand Canal into a high-grade cultural corridor, a high-value ecological corridor, and a high-level tourist corridor.

The 4th Jiangnan Canal Rice Seedling Transplanting Festival kicked off on the riverside of Taicun Village, Zouqu town of Changzhou city during the Dragon Boat Festival. Parents and children from more than 200 families participated in the interactions such as planting rice seedlings, fishing, and wrapping rice dumplings, experiencing witty agricultural work, and feeling the land of the water town nurtured by the canal water.

Changzhou is receiving more than one million tourists every year as the city’s unique cultural elements are being explored, and many popular tourist attractions have been born on both sides of the Grand Canal.

We have promoted the development  of "cultural tourism + industrial heritage" "cultural tourism + urban complex" "cultural tourism + red cultural blocks"  by planning cultural tourism activities  with promotional effects  to form a benign industrial chain  in which culture promotes tourism,tourism promotes commerce and business travel activates culture thereby creating an urban tourism destination  that integrates Jiangnan water towns the characteristics of the Grand Canal and historical and cultural traditions

At the same time, as one of the busiest inland waterways in the world, the Jiangsu section of the Grand Canal reported a cargo volume of 530 million tons in 2020, which is equivalent to the cargo volume of eight Beijing-Shanghai expressways. In order to give a better play to the Grand Canal's shipping function, Jiangsu has decided to take the Grand Canal as an important part of the construction of a modern integrated transportation system by initiating the implementation of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal Green Shipping Demonstration Zone Project in the canal sections in Suzhou, Yangzhou and Huai’an.

By the end of 2020 the pioneering sections in Suzhou,Yangzhou and Huai’an  had been completed  and during the 14th five-year plan period we will build 475 kilometers  of green and modern shipping lanes  to make the Grand Canal in north Jiangsu a green shipping axis  that is safe and smooth, cost-effective intelligent and convenient In the meantime, Jiangsu is making every effort to promote the Grand Canal on the global stage. The World Historical and Cultural Canal Cities Cooperation Organization, headquartered in Yangzhou, is China’s only international non-governmental organization related to the canals. As of 2020, the organization has held the World Canal City Forum for 14 consecutive years. The Jiangsu section of the Grand Canal Cultural Belt has taken the lead in the country to explore and practice the promotion of the exchange and mutual learning of international canal civilizations, and the development of world canal cities in a bid to polish the Grand Canal as China’s cultural icon and national image.
