East China’s Jiangsu province has released a revised guideline on the promotion of high-standard farmland projects to ensure that the province will be able to increase comprehensive grain production capacity.

In the new round of high-standard farmland construction, field roads must be suitable for the passage of agricultural machinery, operations, and transportation of agricultural products to ensure that more than 95% of the main food crops are mechanized for cultivation and harvesting.

In order to meet the needs of modern agricultural development, the new standard clarifies that the quality of irrigation water for farmland construction must meet the standard while efforts should be made to enhance ecological construction of ditches and soil and water conservation, and promotes the purification of farmland irrigation tail water.

Measures will be taken to promote advanced green agricultural production technologies such as water-saving, high-efficiency, precise fertilization, and pesticide application to ensure that by the end of the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the high-standard farmland in Jiangsu will record 1,000 kg of grain per mu on the average.

China has started building drought and flood resistant farmland since 2011, in a bid to ensure food security. By the end of 2018, China has already developed 640 million mu of such farmland, with grain output increasing 100 kg per mu on average.
