National Local Chronicles Museum to open branch in Suzhou

The conference on promoting the construction of the National Local Chronicles Museum Jiangnan Branch (国家方志馆江南分馆) was held in Suzhou recently. As a part of the “Jiangnan Culture” brand project on which Suzhou has been working hard, the branch museum is scheduled to be opened to the public within three years. Let’s take a quick look!

Located to the east of Wuzhong Museum (also Suzhou Wu Culture Museum), the Jiangnan Branch of National Local Chronicles involves an investment of RMB310 million yuan, covers an area of 5,362.02 square meters and a total floorage of 14,700 square meters; the building has four floors above the ground and one floor under.

Canal culture exhibition, local information exhibition and public hall will be set up on the first floor, Jiangnan culture exhibition and public spaces on the second, storerooms and reference rooms on the third, and offices, meeting rooms, research rooms and machine rooms on the fourth. The underground floor will be used as garage and equipment rooms.

The Jiangnan Branch has such two major functions as culture display and the collection, management and use of local chronicles, yearbooks and local information books.

The branch museum will host three core exhibitions: Jiangnan Culture Exhibition, Jiangnan Canal Culture Exhibition, Jiangnan Local Chronicles Culture Exhibition.

In addition, the branch will undertake the following four tasks:

To show the long history of Jiangnan culture and contemporary achievements;

To communicate and present the past and present stories of Jiangnan canals;

To safekeep and showcase the old and new local chronicles, yearbooks and local information books in the Jiangnan area;

To be a key study center for young people in Suzhou.
