Two tulip flowers growing on the same stem were recently spotted in a botanical garden in Nanjing with one being red and the other purple. Let’s take a look.

The twin tulip flowers were found on the shore of Qianhu Lake in Nanjing Zhongshan Botanical Garden.

The purple tulip is really eye-catching among the red tulips.

The twin tulips might have resulted from the genetic variation of individual tulip plant caused by such factors as environment, pathogen infection, natural hybridization, said an official with the botanical garden.

Qin Yalong, an official in charge of scientific popularization in the botanical garden, was quoted as saying that it is the first time for the garden to record two tulip flowers growing on the same stem. He hoped that the twin tulips will take root in the garden and re-bloom next year. He also advised visitors to take good care of the rarity.

According to Qin, tulips have different colors and different structures, which is a phenomenon of natural variation. For example, the yellow hydrangea tulip is green when it is in bud, and the green will fade when the petals bloom, showing a golden color.
