As the construction of “Ten Sceneries of Grand Canal” is now in progress, Gusu District has rolled out efforts to host various events revolving around the Grand Canal. Let’s take a look!
Memory of Grand Canal
Recently an old picture of Hanshan Temple has gone viral on the Internet.
It’s a collection of Shen Lansheng, a literature and history lover. As can be seen from the photo, three adults and a kid stand in front of a tiny house and there hangs a plaque that reads “Han Shan Si” (Hanshan Temple).
Grand Canal’s New Look
Quite a few alleys and lanes near the “Mooring at Night by Maple Bridge”, a scenic spot based on the poem of the same title and one of the “Ten Sceneries of Grand Canal”, have taken on a new look recently.
The old wall in Fanmenqiao Alley, Xueshi Residential Community was refurbished and painted with new patterns. Another wall built to the east of Taibo Temple, Guanzai Alley, Changmen Residential Community underwent a recent renovation as well. The 68-meter-long wall now features colored paintings.
Some poems and paintings about alleys and lanes will also be painted on the wall this year. In doing this, the old alley will be brimming with vitality of modern art.
Grand Canal Culture
A group of intangible cultural heritage artworks including Suzhou Lantern, Suzhou Fan, Suzhou-style Paper Cutting, Straw Weaving, etc. are being showcased in the “Zhongjie Memory” display area of Zhongjielu Residential Community.
The community will create classes and further introduce the history and culture unique to the Grand Canal by inviting inheritors of intangible cultural heritages to give lectures and host experience events.
Besides, there will be Grand Canal culture themed poetry recital, concert, food-tasting event and reading session in the future.
Through such a wide variety of events, you can further your understanding of “Mooring at Night by Maple Bridge”, both the scenic spot and the poem. Come and experience with your friends!
