Communities in SIP’s Huxi sub-district recently hosted diverse events to celebrate the Chinese Laba Festival which, reckoned on the eighth day of the twelfth month on the Chinese lunar calendar, fell on Jan 20 this year.
Chinese have the tradition to eat Laba porridge on the festival. The porridge is usually made of eight ingredients such as rice, nuts and dried fruit, representing people’s prayers for good harvest and harmony in the coming year. Therefore, many communities organized events related to Laba porridge.
Shuixiang Community hosted an event where a number of retirees made and shared Laba porridge together, while a resident in Golf Community made Laba porridge for local community workers, security guards, sanitation workers and police officers.
The authorities of Dushi Community offered 100 bags of Laba porridge ingredients to residents, while the volunteers in Xincheng Community gave ingredients of similar kind to the local elderlies who live alone.
The property management companies in Guidu and Tianyu communities offered free Laba porridge to local residents.
Xinxin Community organized an event to help youngsters acquire a better understanding of folk customs related to the Laba Festival and taught them to draw pictures of Laba porridge.
Suzhou Center Plaza Community carried out a campaign to present Laba porridge to security guards, sanitation workers, maintainers and other non-local workers.
Tianxiang Community held a walking race to mark the Laba Festival.
