East China’s Jiangsu province is expected to see a steep temperature drop by ten degrees Celsius in the coming days, the provincial meteorological center said on Tuesday.
Central and eastern China are expected to see temperatures drop by around 8 C from Tuesday night and last till Friday as a cold air mass sweeps across the country, according to the National Meteorological Center.
The cold snap started to hit Jiangsu Monday evening and Tuesday morning, bringing a temperature drop of 4 to 6 degrees Celsius.
The second wave of the cold snap is expected to hit the province on Wednesday afternoon with an expected drop of temperature by 10 degrees Celsius.
"On the morning of the 7th, low temperatures will occur in the area north of the Huai River with plummeting temperatures at around minus 13 degrees Celsius.A drop of temperatures at minus 7 degrees Celsius will be seen at southern Jiangsu regions and minus 9 to 10 degrees Celsius will be seen in other areas, "said Wu Haiying, Chief Forecaster, Jiangsu Meteorological Observatory.
The market supervisory department has demanded actions to be carried out to inspect special equipment users such as elevators, amusement facilities, and boilers. It has also demanded efforts to strengthen emergency plan drills, strengthen inspections, and deal with hidden dangers in a timely manner.
Residents have been advised to protect water pipes and water meters from being frozen in the freezing weather.
The National Meteorological Center said that temperatures in regions along the Qinling Mountains, which divide the country's north and south, and the Huaihe River, which runs through the eastern region, will drop below -10 C during the week. In the northern sections of South China, temperatures will drop below zero.
On Tuesday, the center issued a nationwide blue cold warning, the lowest alert level in its three-tier system. Due to the cold air, Xinjiang Uygur and Tibet autonomous regions and Qinghai province will have snow with precipitation of up to 18 millimeters from Tuesday to Wednesday.
From Wednesday till Thursday, snow and sleet will hit Southwest China and the Yangtze River region with fog and gusts. The center warned that transportation and police authorities should be ready for icy roads and people need to be prepared for the impact on agricultural and industrial products.
