The construction of a new railway that connects Hongqiao Airport and Pudong Airport kicked off recently in Shanghai. This airport railway is expected to bring great convenience to regular travelers between Suzhou and Shanghai. Passengers can swipe their Shanghai Public Transportation Card to enter the train stations and also transfer to other metro lines in Shanghai.
The railway project measures 68.8 kilometers in length and over 88% is to be built underground. According to the construction plan, the railway line will have a total ofnine stations including Hongqiao Station (existing), Qibao Station, Huajing Station, Sanlin South Station, Zhangjiang Station, Shanghai International Resort Station, Pudong Airport Station, Pudong Airport Terminal 3 Station (reserved) and Shanghai East Railway Station. The whole project is anticipated to be completed in 2024.
Currently, traveling from Hongqiao Airport to Pudong Airport by Shanghai Metro Line 2 takes about 90 minutes, which will be shortened to less than 40 minutes after the new railway goes into operation. That is to say, with the 20-minute bullet train ride from Suzhou to Shanghai counted in, it will take one hour only for a person in Suzhou to get to Shanghai Pudong International Airport.
