In the last few years two streets famed for their water features have taken precedence with travelers in Suzhou. They are Shantang Street and its major rival Pingjiang Road.
·Pingjiang Road
However, if a complaint is to be leveled at both locations it is that they are highly commercialized and often crowded. One place where time has however not quite caught up yet is Shengjiadai (盛家带).
This street is located between Shiquan Street and Soochow University’s main campus, and is most easily accessed by leaving the former location and turning towards the campus south gate after passing the 1937 Nanjing Memorial Statue.
The first indication one has of arriving is being met by a small coffee shop that faces onto a wooden overhang shading the road. This hangs with grapes in the summer.
But a few steps further and you find yourself standing on a bridge looking down the canal. At this juncture one has the choice of walking on either bank.
Personal preference would lead to the northern one that runs beside Soochow University. The reason being twofold: Firstly, as the path is slightly narrower the only traffic likely to been countered is bikes; Secondly, more traditional residences are found on this side, with many of the doors welcomingly open.
With residents tending to be older, one can therefore still find riverside washing taking place, witness meals being eaten within a traditional setting, or experience Chinese chess being played.
In short, Shengjiadai is a relaxing escape and a welcome break from the busier streets adjoining it, albeit assuming one avoids rush hour.
