East China’s Jiangsu province made swift response to General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important instructions on resolutely putting an end to wasting food and promoting thrift.

The diners, all government officials, expressed their determination to follow the clean your plate campaign in accordance with General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important instructions on resolutely putting an end to wasting food and promoting thrift.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the importance of food security, the officials said.

What they should do is to take practical measures to promote thrift and oppose extravagance, they added.

In recent years, there has been a resurgence of wasting of food on dining tables though the Chinese government has launched clean your plate campaign.

Signs reminding diners of refraining from wasting of food can be seen at restaurants here and there.

In response to the General Secretary’s call, the Jiangsu Catering Association has issued a collective initiative by joining hands with more than 70 organizations to advocate clean plate and reject wasting of food.

Many restaurants in Jiangsu have offered doggie bags for free to enable the diners to take home the leftovers.

Insiders reveal that almost 200 billion yuan worth of food is discarded from Chinese dining tables every year due to excessive food consumption, taking tolls on the nation's scarce water and farm resources.
