The district of Jiangning in Nanjing city has taken proactive measures to highlight ecological repair, environmental protection and green development by revamping the 19-km-long shoreline along the Yangtze River.

In early summer, walking on the banks of the Yangtze River in Jiangning District, you will see the water is beautiful and the shore is green. A year ago, however, it was a heavily polluted river beach.

The section of the Yangtze River in Jiangning is the busiest of all as it lies at the upstream of the "golden waterway" in the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River.

The once extensive and over-developed development mode affected the ecological zone along the shoreline. The bustling docks and factories and the roaring machines amid the flying dust deteriorated the ecological environment.

Last year, authorities in Jiangning district shut down or relocated 52 industrial projects that failed to meet environmental standards.

In the meantime, the district government also launched ecological repair projects to revamp and restore the ecosystem along the Yangtze.

Through one year of efforts, the section of the Yangtze River in Jiangning is now planted with rows of trees with 270,000 seedlings growing like a green carpet along the river.

"There are many trees here and the place is nice for outing and picnic," said a resident of Nanjing.

"We have shut down or relocated enterprises and breeding farms along the Yangtze so as to prevent the mother river from being polluted. Afforestation is intended to protect the soil erosion and water loss along the Yangtze River, protect the ecological environment along the shoreline, and rein in pollution from the source in the section of the Yangtze River in Jiangsu," said Zhang Bo, Official in charge of Yangtze River greenery protection in Jiangning.

In the meantime, Jiangning district has embedded cultural traits and urban distinctions in the protection of the Yangtze River.

"We have displayed fishing boats and fishing gear, created an ecological park that integrates culture, leisure, entertainment and sightseeing, shared the fruits of the protection over the Yangtze River, and advocated that all people participate in the protection of the ecosystem along the Yangtze," said Li Jun, Deputy General Manager of Jiangning Transportation Construction Group.
