Hailed as heroes in harm's way, over 40,000 healthcare workers in 100 plus medical teams converged in Hubei, the hardest hit province, from across the nation to support epidemic control. The success of Wuhan’s anti-epidemic battle is inseparable from the strenuous efforts made by the medical teams from around the country. More than 2800 doctors and nurses from east China’s Jiangsu Province played a vital role in containing the COVID-19 pandemic in Hubei. Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation dispatched staff reporters to Hubei during the anti-epidemic days to record the unforgettable moments in a TV documentary that was released Tuesday in Nanjing.

The TV documentary was aired Tuesday afternoon at Nanjing Medical University.

Lu Xiang, deputy general commander of the Jiangsu Headquarters for Pairing-up Assistance in Hubei for Epidemic Control, shared his story with the audience.

Zhao Wei, head of the Jiangsu medical team in Huangshi city, Hubei province, was heavily involved in the treatment and rescue of the COVID-19 patients.

Zhao Wei, Head of the Jiangsu Medical Team in Huangshi City

What impressed me deeply is February 15

when we admitted four critically infected patients

in one hour before midnight

They were reduced to life-threatening conditions

and were transferred to the hospital all at once

We rushed to give personalized treatment to the patients

in the hope of bring them back to life

Zhao Wei and the five doctors in the same ward stayed in the ward almost sleeplessly for the first two days after entering the ward.

They work in groups of two, six hours for one shift, and they were extremely exhausted and almost collapsed when they passed work on to the next shift.

The strong desire and conviction to overcome the disease supported them to stand up tenaciously. Yu Yan is also one of the nurses who volunteered to join the anti-epidemic fight. As soon as she arrived in Huangshi, she was assigned to the Intensive Care Unit of Huangshi Central Hospital.

Yu Yan, Member of the Jiangsu Medical Team in Huangshi

The patients are totally dependent on us

such as foot massage, cutting nails

shaving beards, combing hair and taking medicine

One patient told me this way

I think you are better than our granddaughter

while some other patients said

that I think you are better than our daughter-in-law

You are doing your job

but for he feels that you are protecting us

as if you gave your life

Starting in February, Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation dispatched two teams of staff reporters to Wuhan and Huangshi to shoot impressive moments by traveling from one hospital to another, visiting virus-infected areas and interviewing more than 160 people.

By shooting 15 thousand minutes of raw video, the staff reporters have edited and produced an 8-episode TV documentary titled Heroes in Harm's Way: The Fight against the Pandemic in Hubei by Jiangsu Medical Team.

The documentary has been hailed since its release online with 41 million plays on the Internet so far.

The red zone is the so-called center of storm

As a documentary crew member

we were eager to going inside the red zone

to see what was happening inside

and how the doctors and nurses

were committed to their work

The first time when we went inside

we saw three nurses bending over a patient

and later we were told

they were intubating the patient

At that moment I stood beside the patient's bed

about a meter away

You might ask me if I was scared

It was not true if I said I was not afraid

but I saw in the camera lens

that the medical staff were so calm

and focused on doing everything

I think they gave me spiritual strength at that moment

The fear is really fleeting

and I immediately engaged in my work

Lu Xiang worked for 47 days in Hubei until he and the medical teams were withdrawn on March 27 when Huangshi was cleared of infected cases.

Lu Xiang, Deputy General Commander of the Jiangsu Headquarters for Pairing-up Assistance in Hubei

If we did not rush to the front line

of anti-epidemic battle in time

the epidemic prevention and control

would not be the situation today

so how critical and important

is the medical team’s assistance to Hubei

The Jiangsu medical team also plays a key role

especially the effective prevention and treatment

of the patients in Wuhan

The treatment plan is constantly updated and matured

so that it became a standardized process

that everyone was following

so this epidemic was finally brought under control
