The building designers drew their inspiration from the streets, lanes and yards in Suzhou. If you look down from a height, you will find different parts of the museum are connected in a distinctive way that makes the museum look like the Chinese character “吴” (Wu).

The whole museum has three floors above the ground and one under. The first floor is used for temporary exhibition and education center. The main exhibition hall is on the second floor and the workspace on the third.

A wide atrium is set up at the center of the exhibition area to connect different halls as a typical Chinese yard does.

On one side of the central yard, there is an extra large French window where tourists can have a full view of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and Baodai Bridge from afar.

In front of the entrance to the main exhibition hall on the second floor, there is a set of beautiful garden sceneries in miniature, which is a good reminder of the quaint and elegant Suzhou yards.

The permanent exhibitions on the second floor are primarily composed of “Wuzhong in History” (考古探吴中) and “Wuzhong in Culture” (风雅颂吴中).

The “Wuzhong in History” part introduces the origin, development and characteristics of the Wu Culture from the perspective of archaeology.
