Suzhou Symphonic Chinese Orchestra (SSCO) gave an open-air concert by the Taihu Lake in SND yesterday afternoon (May 22), which is the orchestra’s first on-site performance since the outbreak of COVID-19.

As a mark of respect for all the front line workers during the pandemic, the concert started with the Chinese musical instrument ensemble My Motherland that expresses people’s deep love towards their country and hometown.

Combining the beautiful scenery in Jiangnan with Jiangnan’s distinctive stringed and woodwind instruments, the concert brought the audience a fresh experience through innovative forms of artistic presentation including bamboo flute solo, pipa unison and percussion ensemble.

According to Zhu Changyao, SSCO’s Art Director, SSCO will join hands with Wuzhong District Culture Center to stage 10 performances for the city’s people as of next Monday (May 25).

Besides, SSCO is planning to perform for SND’s residents in five communities and towns in June. The orchestra is also planning to go to the grassroots level by arranging 30 performances for residential communities and 60 performances for schools.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, SSCO presented a unique virtual ensemble My Motherland. Every musician shot his/her playing at home and then their videos were processed through video synthesis. The synthesized ensemble was posted on various online platforms to cheer up Wuhan and to pray for China.

Meanwhile, SSCO live-streamed several large concerts via China’s mainstream online platforms; the concert series has been viewed over 600,000 times.
