Medical staff from Wuxi who were sent to Wuhan to help fight the COVID-19 epidemic have started to make their way home, with the first batch arriving on March 17.

Thirty-three medical staff who have been working in Jiangxia District No 1 People's Hospital for 53 days were the first to arrive in the city. They helped treat over 550 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, of which over 310 recovered.

People in Hubei and around the country expressed gratitude to the medical workers for treating patients at the risk of their own lives.

They were greeted by hugs as soon as they stepped off the plane at the Nanjing Lukou International Airport.

Wu Xiaolong, director of the first team of medical workers, kept his promise to look after his team members and make sure they all returned home safely.

The local government sent a bus to pick up the workers from the airport. Escorted by a police motorcade, the medical workers received salutes at checkpoints while entering the city.

Another 137 medical workers from Wuxi will soon fly back to the city. All of them will be quarantined for 14 days before returning home.

More than 42,000 medical workers and other personnel belonging to 346 medical rescue teams from across China were sent to Hubei between Jan 24 and March 8 to assist local medical workers there. These medical workers performed admirably in the battle against the novel coronavirus over the past one and half months.
