As music played, 300 drones took off to form Chinese characters or various iconic patterns in the night sky during the welcome ceremony for new students at the Tianmu Lake Campus of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics on September 17. The stunning drone display went viral on Chinese social media.

The university signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with Changzhou City and an educational cooperation framework agreement with Liyang City, under the administration of Changzhou, on May 8, 2017 in order to establish the university’s Tianmu Lake Campus. The new campus welcomed the first batch of undergraduate students on September 2, including about 1,000 students from the university’s College of Civil Aviation/College of Civil Flight as well as trainees from major domestic airlines. The campus has also enrolled a small number of students specialized in aviation services, drones, computer science and accounting. The campus in its first semester has about 2,000 students in total.

Facilities in the campus are armed with latest smart technologies. Student’s dormitory buildings have applied face recognition to improve the access control. Students can pay for food at the dining hall by scanning his face using a device. In addition, a school app makes life and living for students as well as teaching for teachers never so easy, such as paying bills, printing academic reports and activating bank account.

"In the past few days, I have fully felt the sense of science and technology in all aspects at the campus. I’m very proud of the drone show tonight. This is a dream school and I will definitely study hard here," said Jiang Yihao, a freshman student.
