For the past ten years, Xu Zhengjun, an elderly CPC member from Bencha town, Rudong County, would visit the local school to donate money to the needy students who are about to enter the university. On Tuesday, Xu appeared again in the school to live up to his ten-year-old promise.
Li Yugui scored 372 in this year’s college entrance exam and was admitted into the PLA Army Engineering University. Li is from a financially-strapped farmer’s family and his sister is still attending high school.
Li and three other students, who are also enrolled by universities, are the beneficiaries of Xu Zhengjun’s generosity.
Xu used to be a judge of the intermediate people’s court of Nantong. He is also an alumnus of the Bencha Middle School. In 2016 he gave the promise that he would donate money to 40 college students averaging 5000 yuan each.
Xu lives a simple life. His wife has been hospitalized at the local nursing home. Wherever he goes, he would carry a handbag that he bought 40 years ago.
Xu’s charitable deeds have been collected by the middle school’s museum of history.
