A drama on an island hero and his wife premiered Tuesday evening in Yancheng city. Let’s take a close look.
Created and performed by the provincial performing arts group and the provincial opera house, Island Heroes is adapted from the touching story of Wang Jicai and his wife Wang Shihua, the role models of modern times.
Wang Jicai was posted to the Kaishan Island in the Yellow Sea as a militia sentry in 1986, followed by his wife, Wang Shihua, who quit her job as a teacher to assist her husband.
On July 27, 2018, Wang Jicai died from sudden illness while on duty. He was 58.
The husband and wife have been hailed as role models and awarded honorary titles by the central government.
The Kaishan Island is located near the border area of the Japanese and South Korean high seas, 12 kilometers away from Lianyungang, Jiangsu province.
In the meantime, thematic operas and theatrical performances have been staged to eulogize the late role models such as Dong Cunrui, Li Yinjiang and Qian Xueseng.
Monk Jianzhen’s Journey to Japan and the Diaries of John Rabe will also be staged across the province. The two original operas gained widespread popularity when going on tour performances in Europe and America earlier this year.
