East China’s Jiangsu province held a ceremony Sunday in Nanjing to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its sister relationship with the Australian State of Victoria. Governor Wu Zhenglong and Premier of Victoria Daniel Andrews attended the ceremony and delivered speeches.
In his speech, Wu Zhenglong expressed his warm welcome to Premier Andrews and other friends from Victoria for their visit to Jiangsu.
He also expressed his gratitude to all the guests who have long been concerned about supporting the development of friendly relations between Jiangsu and Victoria.
The Governor said that Victoria is the first overseas provincial region that forged sister relations with Jiangsu.
He noted that over the past 40 years, Jiangsu and Victoria have achieved fruitful cooperation with the cooperation mechanism between the two sides becoming more sound, the cooperation field made wider and the people's hearts drawing closer, making it a model of regional communication between China and Australia.
Wu remarked that reform and opening up is the key to determining the destiny of China, and also the root for Jiangsu's development to rank in the forefront of the country.
He noted that President Xi Jinping’s important speech at the second "Belt and Road" Forum for International Cooperation pointed out the direction for China to expand a new round of high-level opening up.
Wu Zhenglong said last year, the government of the State of Victoria and China’s National Development and Reform Commission signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly promote the construction of the Belt and Road, which has created a broad space for our deepening cooperation.
We will cherish the friendship and cooperation that the two regions have established, the governor said, adding that Jiangsu will take this celebration as an opportunity to further strengthen economic and trade cooperation and exchanges, deepen scientific and technological innovation cooperation, expand multi-level and wide-ranging people-to-people exchanges, improve cooperation mechanisms, and work together towards a better future.
Andrews said that in the past 40 years, the friendship between Victoria and Jiangsu has been strengthened, and the pragmatic cooperation in various fields has yielded fruitful results, bringing tangible benefits to the people of the two regions.
With Victoria being the first state in Australia to sign the BRI MoU, Andrews hoped that the State of Victoria will take the 40th anniversary as a new starting point and share new opportunities brought about by the Belt and Road to further deepen the exchanges in the fields of economy, trade, science and technology, education, culture, sports and health, and further enhance mutual friendship and strengthen partnership so as to promote the comprehensive cooperation between the two regions to a new level and better benefit the people of the two sides.
