More than 300 participants from 14 teams competed at the 2019 Xuanwu Lake Dragon Boat Competition on the morning of April 13, when a dragon boat sports base was also formally launched in the lake.
With the water area wide and calm, Xuanwu Lake was a venue for the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Game in Nanjing. Jacques Rogge, the Honorary President of the IOC, praised the lake as a world-class, natural water sports base.
Xuanwu Lake has been selected as the dragon boat competition venue by many organizers. To promote the national fitness campaign, authorities started experimenting a new development model by combining sports with tourism this year, with a focus to develop the dragon boat sports base.
The base is open to the public and welcomes citizens to experience the dragon boat after making an appointment. Groups can also apply to organize contests in the lake. The base has invited professional coaches to help dragon boat enthusiasts and support competitions.
