Jiangsu supports high quality development with core technology breakthroughs

General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out
during his inspection tour in Jiangsu in 2017 that the core technology cannot be bought and we must be confident, patient, and determined to boost independent innovation. Following the General Secretary’s guidance, Jiangsu has strived to promote core technological breakthroughs in key areas, accelerate the construction of an independent and controllable modern industrial system, and play a greater role in supporting its high-quality development.


This device seems to be inconspicuous, but it is the most important component of industrial robots - the reducer, which accounts for 30%-40% of the cost of the entire industrial robot.

Since the 1970s, this key technology has been monopolized by Japanese brands, and Chinese companies have been clamped down for a long time.


A few years ago, Zhenkang Welding Electromechanical Co., Ltd., located in Haimen, Nantong, made an amazing move and decided to take most of the company's annual profits as a technical solution for the reducer.

Zhenkang persisted in spite of the murky market prospects. After continuously investing more than 300 million yuan in research and development, it realized the independent production of the reducer, forcing the average price of Japanese products to drop by more than 50% in the domestic market.


At present, Zhenkang has provided purely domestic industrial robots for more than 200 manufacturing enterprises across the country. In the next 3-5 years, it will build the largest and most advanced robot core component production workshop and industrial chain base in China.

More and more companies are embarking on the journey of breaking through the core technologies, even though it is a long-distance test that tests strength and endurance. From quantum-secure mobile communications targeting cutting-edge technology to IoT platforms that connect industrial enterprises, from aircraft engine blades that focus on critical components to high-temperature superconducting cables that anchor core materials, one single champion after another have not only laid the foundation for Jiangsu’s manufacturing but also become an important cornerstone for Jiangsu to build a modern and controllable industrial system.


In July last year, Jiangsu took the lead in the country by issuing the "Guiding Opinions on Accelerating the Cultivation of Advanced Manufacturing Clusters", focusing on cultivating 13 advanced manufacturing clusters by gathering support for the province's integration of policy support and joint efforts to foster the development of industrial clusters.

Not long ago, Kunshan released an industrial technology research plan, focusing on more than 1,000 technical needs of local enterprises, and soliciting solutions from universities and research institutes around the world.

They include a number of technical bottlenecks such as flexible folding display technology, wafer-level advanced packaging technology, and protein fixed-point modification technology. Kunshan hopes to accelerate the formation of four high-end industrial clusters such as optoelectronics, semiconductors, small nucleic acids, biomedicine and smart manufacturing by building this technology platform.


Based on its advantages of science and education resources, Jiangsu will accelerate the capture of a number of iconic core technologies with independent intellectual property rights this year. In response to the shortcomings of basic research, the provincial science and technology department has launched a frontier program to lead the basic research of technology, focusing on the three major areas of new materials, biomedicine and semiconductors while laying emphasis on original technologies.

In the meantime, Jiangsu will launch a provincial science and technology resources coordination service center to promote more enterprises in basic research. This year, Jiangsu will focus on pioneering fields such as artificial intelligence, future networks, and graphene by implementing 100 research projects and integrating and implementing more than 80 results transformation projects around 13 advanced manufacturing industry clusters so as to seize the future technical commanding heights, and lead the high-tech industry.
