Starting today, Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation will launch a special program to tell of the inspiring stories of the role models who have dedicated to the development of the province. In today’s episode, we will focus on Qian Qihu, the country's top science award winner and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Qian Qihu, an internationally renowned protection engineering expert and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, is a professor of the Army Engineering University of the People's Liberation Army. He is the founder of China's modern protective engineering theory and the founder and leader of the protective engineering discipline.
Engaged in protective engineering research for more than 60 years, he has led his research team to solve some key technical problems of nuclear engineering, such as nuclear weapons, grounding, ground-explosion and new type of ground-penetrating bomb and make outstanding contribution to the construction and development of various periods of protection engineering in China.
In the early 1970s, there was a loud noise in the Gobi Desert, and a mushroom cloud rose in the desert. When people cheered and celebrated, the young Qian Qihu quickly rushed into the nuclear test center in protective clothing and surveyed the damage to the protection door of the aircraft cavern used for the experiment. What Qian Qihu was engaged in was the "protective engineering" research that China needed badly at that time.
In the view of Qian Qihu, if nuclear weapons are regarded as "national sharp edges," then the protection project is "building a shield for the country." In 1975, Qian Qihu creatively used the most advanced "finite element method" calculation theory at that time and large-scale transistor computer to calculate the design problems such as deformation control, and designed the protective door of the aircraft cavern with the largest span and the highest resistance at that time..
As the "spear-shield" attack and defense of the world's weapon technology escalated, Qian Qihu cracked the world-class protection problem again and again, and designed the underground iron and steel Great Wall" for China to help rank china’s protective engineering at the foremost of the world.
While making outstanding contributions in the field of military protection, Qian has also been concerned about the construction of major national projects. Every time going abroad for conferences, Qian Qihu would take subways in the place where he visited or take a taxi to travel through tunnels. In this way, he meant to inspect the technologies that are needed for China’s national construction.
