More than 1 million people in Jiangsu made blood donation last year to contribute 338.46 tons to basically meet the needs of clinical blood use, the provincial blood center said on Tuesday.
With the latest revision of the "Jiangsu Provincial Blood Donation Regulations" that made adjustment of blood donors' age requirements and blood donation, the number of unpaid blood donors aged 55 to 60 increased by more than 5,000, and the proportion of blood donation from 300 ml to 400 ml also increased significantly.
The number of voluntary blood donations in China reached nearly 5.97 million in the first five months this year, up 3.6 percent year-on-year, according to the National Health Commission.
The amount of blood donated hit 2,065 tons during the same period, marking a 5.2-percent increase.
The number of voluntary blood donations has seen 20 years of consecutive growth, from 328,000 in 1998 to 14.59 million in 2017, figures from the NHC showed. The number of voluntary blood donors and the volume of blood collected in the country from January to November this year increased by 3 and 4 percent respectively year on year, according to the NHC.
Thanks to a system for more rational clinical use of blood, China has managed to reduce the amount of blood used for each patient and clinical operation by 20 percent and 30 percent on average, respectively, in the past five years, according to the commission.
