A 50-year-old man in east China’s Jiangsu province has become the oldest stem cell donor the province has ever recorded.
Shen Xinhua, 50, donated hematopoietic stem cells Tuesday morning at the Zhongda Hospital affiliated to Southeast University, becoming the oldest hematopoietic stem cell donor in the province.
In 2007, Shen Xinhua, who worked in the Baoying County Health Planning Commission, registered with the China Marrow Bank. In February of this year, he was informed by the local Red Cross staff of the fact that his hematopoietic stem cells were successfully matched and could save the life of a one-year-old patient.
According to regulations, the age limit for hematopoietic stem cell donors is 55 years old. Shen Xinhua, 50, is of senior age but he did not hesitate a moment to say yes to the donation request to save a child with immunodeficiency in Chongqing.
Shen Xinhua has thus become the 686th hematopoietic stem cell donor in the province and also the the oldest one.
