On the afternoon of April 18, the smell of moxa hung in the air at the library of the Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA), where many people gathered for an exhibition of traditional Chinese medicine organized by Suzhou City.

Suzhou has earned a special place in China’s history of TCM for many famous TCM doctors in the city, the cradle of Wu Culture. Collectively, they are known as Wu medical school.

The exhibition at UGA was the fourth stop of a Europe tour of TCM Wu medical school and also part of celebrations of the 20th anniversary of establishing sister city relationship between Suzhou and Grenoble.

According to a survey by China Central Television's overseas offices, Chinese medicine is the fourth Chinese cultural icon in the world after Chinese food, kung fu and Peking Opera. This means it is the right time to help Chinese medicine go global. In recent years, the Suzhou Foreign Affairs Office, in cooperation with Suzhou Health and Planning Commission and Suzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, has used the sister city relationship with European cities to explore measures in promoting TCM Wu medical school abroad.

Cultural exhibitions can tell the story of traditional Chinese medicine. Relying on the sister city relationship with foreign cities, Suzhou has developed the “TCM Wu Medical School Europe Tour,” a branding communication project, to continuously promote Chinese medicine culture. Efforts have been made in tour design, exhibition production and event publicity, so the stops in Venice of Italy, Konstanz of Germany, Nowy Sacz of Poland and Grenoble of France were all welcomed by locals.

Suzhou has also boosted the reputation of TCM by developing well the TCM center at C&T in Tulcea, Romania. The center in this sister city of Suzhou opened in September 2013 with the support of Suzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The hospital hosted six Romanian students to study acupuncture and massage in Suzhou and also sent four Chinese TCM experts in two groups for short-term exchanges in the Romanian city, where they also trained local TCM practicers. Through joint efforts, TCM, acupuncture and moxibustion have become popular among patients and their families in Romania. The TCM center also showcases Suzhou’s iconic embroidery, calligraphy and painting, creating a strong traditional cultural atmosphere distinctive of Suzhou for Romanian patients. The TCM center has already won a large number of fans of both TCM and Chinese culture, and the number of patients to the clinic has increased year by year.

Academic exchanges also play an important role in promoting TCM, one of the world's oldest medical systems. Since 2013, experts from Suzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine have visited Suzhou’s sister cities in Romania, France, Italy, Germany, Poland and other countries to conduct academic exchanges with European medical institutions. While letting more people overseas know TCM, Suzhou’s medical experts have also actively learned from their foreign counterparts and are more prepared in advancing the integration of Chinese and the Western approaches for TCM’s better development and growth.

After nearly five years of efforts, TCM Wu medical school has blazed a new trail in foreign exchanges by working with sister cities of Suzhou. Suzhou’s TCM has now enjoyed a higher reputation abroad and made more and more friends.
