The Nanjing Pancreas Forum 2018 organized by the Jiangsu Health and Family Planning Commission and Jiangsu Province Hospital (The First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University) was held in Nanjing from Oct. 11 to 14.

At the opening ceremony on Oct. 12, Professor Markus W. Büchler from Heidelberg University, Professor Carlos Fernandez-del Castillo of Harvard University, Professor Miao Yi of Nanjing Medical University, Professor Christopher L. Wolfgang from Johns Hopkins University and Professor Takaori of Kyoto University of Japan endorsed the Global Pancreatic Talent Program, which trains professionals specialized in the pancreatic field.

The forum attracted top medical experts and scholars from eight countries including China, Germany, the United States and Japan, who had in-depth discussions on many hot issues in the field. As China’s largest scale academic conference in the pancreatic field, and held in the English language only, the forum provided a bridge between clinical medicine and research into pancreatic cancer, acute and chronic pancreatitis in China and the latest international developments.

The conference introduced many of the latest research results and progress in surgical treatment. Professor Büchler explained in detail arterial and venous resection as well as his own ESPAC clinical trials. Professor Wolfgang talked about neoadjuvant chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer. Professor Chritos Dervenis with the University of Cyprus Medical School gave a comprehensive introduction of techniques in pancreatic cancer surgery. Professor Miao Yi shared views on the assessment of arterial invasion in pancreatic cancer.

In addition, experts and scholars from China, Switzerland, Japan, India and other countries reported their experiences, latest clinical progress and research outcomes in treating pancreatic cancer and acute and chronic pancreatitis. Philip Müller from Klinik Beau-Site Hospital in Switzerland made a presentation on a new kind of surgery for pancreatic resection at the conference, publicizing the new surgery technique for the first time on a global context. The new technique doesn’t need to remove pancreatic organs, so reduces pain and speeds up patient recovery time, which is expected to usher in a new diagnosis and treatment after it is mature in the future.

Pancreatic cancer, a malignant tumor, is difficult to diagnose and find. The Pancreatic Center of Jiangsu Province Hospital, one of the leading pancreatic centers in China, has enjoyed an increasing international academic recognition. The center has a team of talent with international academic backgrounds and has already pioneered a number of technologies for pancreatic diseases.
