In the past few days, the water level of many rivers in northern Jiangsu has continued to rise, due to the influence of typhoons and upstream flood discharges. Some of them have reached the early warning level.
According to figures released by the provincial headquarters for flood control and drought relief, the Jiangsu Provincial Hydrology and Water Resources Survey Bureau issued three flood warnings at 9:00 Tuesday morning.
The water level of the Jinhu section of the Huaihe River waterway was 10.58m, reaching the blue alert level.
The water level of the Xinyang River in the Xiangyang section is 10.04m, and the water level in the main stream of the Huaihe River is 14.35m, which meet the yellow alert level.
Due to the rapid rise of the water level in the Xiangyang section of the Xinyi River and the inundation of low-lying areas, around 10 pm Monday evening, eight elderly people were trapped by water, prompting the public security department to mobilize police officers for rescue operations.
After four hours of searching and rescue, all 8 elderly folks were relieved out of trouble.
The Sihong Station of Xinyi River reported a water level of 16.98m at 8 o'clock Tuesday morning, reaching a record high. The Dazhai River flowing through Suqian Sihong City is a tributary of the Xinyi River. At present, the water level has exceeded 1.6 meters along the shore. Many communities and crop fields have been flooded due to river water intrusion. Local firefighters, militiamen and community members have reinforced the dykes and sealed the river with sandbags.
Affected by the recent flooding of the upper reaches of the Huaihe River and the recent continuous rainfall, the water level of Hongze Lake has continued to rise. In the next few days, more than 4 billion square meters of floods are expected to enter the lake. The Sanhe sluice gate has opened to discharge water in order to control the water level and ensure the flood control safety of the Hongze Lake and the lower reaches of the Huaihe River.
