Nobel laureates Richard J. Roberts and Hartmut Michel, together with top autoimmunity researcher Yehuda Shoenfeld attended the signing ceremony of open a workstation of the Hope (Nanjing) Life Science Innovation Research Institute in Nanjing’s Gulou High-tech Zone.

The research institute is engaged in the introduction, incubation and transferring of biotechnology, research and development of innovative drugs and medical devices and related technologies.

The institute cooperates with the Translational Medicine lab at the School of Medicine, Stanford University in advancing key technologies such as early detection and screening techniques for malignant tumors, biological treatments and drugs, in order to develop drugs for chronic diseases including Alzheimer's disease and diabetes.

A world-renowned biochemist and molecular biologist, Richard J. Roberts was awarded the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Phillip Allen Sharp for the discovery of introns in eukaryotic DNA and the mechanism of gene-splicing. Hartmut Michel, a German biochemist, received the 1988 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his significant contribution towards an understanding of photosynthesis. The two Nobel Prize winners signed cooperation agreements with the research institute and also discussed the transfer of scientific and technological achievements as well as researches in Nanjing.

Later, the institute will introduce the enzyme tumor markers and genetic testing techniques of the two professors. At the same time, the two Nobel laureates will also assist the Gulou High-tech Zone to establish in-depth cooperation with internationally renowned research institutes to attract world’s leading biomedical talents and enterprises to settle in Nanjing.
