A research team led by Prof Gu Xiaosong of Nantong University and Prof He Zhigang of Harvard Medical School published a paper entitled “Reactivation of Dormant Relay Pathways in Injured Spinal Cord by KCC2 Manipulations” on Cell online on July 19.

The team discovered that KCC2 can help restore stepping ability after undertaking a small-molecule screen in mice with spinal cord injuries.

Many human spinal cord injuries are anatomically incomplete but exhibit complete paralysis. It is unknown why spared axons fail to mediate functional recovery in these cases.

But the research suggests a promising treatment for promoting functional recovery after spinal cord injury.

It is the first time for Nantong University researchers to publish a paper on the leading scientific journal Cell.
