Here comes the annual Dragon Boat Festival!

“Our Festival - The Dragon Boat Festival in Nanjing Museum” is currently being held at the Nanjing Museum from June 15th – 18th. A series of activities including drama, folk performance, poem recitation, cultural lectures, custom shows into schools and communities, are held to make the public experience the charm of the traditional Chinese festival.

This time, we went to the Nanjing Museum's Intangible Cultural Heritages Hall, which is a hall separated from the main body of the Nanjing Museum. You don't need to show your ID card to get a ticket for the tour. If you choose to drive there, you need to drive about 30 meters from the main gate to the underground garage and then turn left at the exit. Voila! The Intangible Cultural Heritages Hall will be there.

This is the Intangible Cultural Heritages Hall!

You will see the introduction of the hall once you step into it.

And then we will see the first intangible cultural heritage – Chinese knot!

  Chinese Knot

The Chinese knot presented here is the duck egg net made of multi-colored silk thread. One of the staff member introduced that more customers came to buy duck egg net and multi-colored rope because of the Dragon Boat Festival. At the same time, Nanjing Museum will hold a special activity in the cultural gallery, teaching everyone how to make egg net and Multi-colored wrist band from June 16 to June 18!

  Opera Mask

Opera masks are traditional Chinese opera actor's facial paintings that are used in the stage performance. During the Dragon Boat Festival, the Nanjing Museum will also arrange mask painters to teach you how to draw these exquisite opera masks so that you can get closer to this art!

The master told us that the traditional art should be developed while being preserved because every child was very interested in this traditional culture!

  Xuzhou’s Sachet

Xuzhou sachet is a traditional folk art. In 2008, Xuzhou sachet was selected into the first national intangible cultural heritage list.

In December 2017, President Xi Jinping came to the village of Mazhuang in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, and saw the hand-made sachets, praising them "really good" and "very delicate". He also bought a sachet to support the sachet business in the village.

  Pear Candy in Changzhou

The master in the picture is super awesome! Her name is Ye Lili, nearly 70 years old. she is a national and provincial intangible cultural heritage inheritor.

It is said that Pear Candy was first made by the famous minister Wei Zheng. It is very effective to cough, phlegm and other symptoms.

It is said that she will be there at the Nanjing Museum to teach everybody how to make pear candy with the seasonal mugwort.

  Yangzhou Embroidery

Influenced by Local Culture, Yangzhou embroidery follows the cultural connotation of Chinese paintings, gradually forms two major categories – “the landscape embroidery” and “the freehand embroidery”.

In November 2014, Yangzhou embroidery was listed in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Representative Projects Expanded Project List.

Apart from these amazing exhibits, Nanjing Museum also prepares wonderful performances to the audience at the tea house.
