International Crayfish Festival opens in Xuyi

  The 18th China Xuyi International Crayfish Festival opened Tuesday to run until June 21. A series of activities will be held during the festival period, such as the signing of industry investment projects, the 10,000 people savoring crayfish feast and the crayfish cooking contest.

  Cooperation fairs will be launched in Nanjing, Beijing, Shanghai and Malaysia and Indonesia during the festival.

  Xuyi now reports 100,000 tons of trading volume of crayfish each year with the sales volume exceeding 7 billion yuan, the brand value nearly 17 billion yuan, building fortunes for nearly 100,000 people.

  Xuyi is a small town made famous for its crayfish and every year the town celebrates its crayfish festival in six cities across the country.

  One in eight residents in Xuyi county, in eastern China’s Jiangsu province, works in the freshwater crayfish industry, and the signs are visible everywhere.

  Oversize sculptures of the crustaceans and inflatable crayfish dot parks and roadways and flank the entrance to an upscale downtown hotel.
