Jiangsu Cultural Carnival opens in Hong Kong

  The Jiangsu Cultural Carnival, organized by the Jiangsu Provincial Government, the Hong Kong Association of Societies of Jiangsu, and the Jiangsu Residents Association in Hong Kong, was opened Friday evening in Victoria Park, Hong Kong. Wu Zhenglong, deputy secretary of the provincial party committee and governor of Jiangsu and Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech respectively.

  With the officiating guests lighting up the "Gate of Jiangsu," the Jiangsu Cultural Carnival was officially opened. Theatrical performances, intangible cultural heritages, food, tourism and many other exciting highlights of Jiangsu filled the venue with the charm of Jiangsu to gain popularity with the people of Hong Kong.

  During his speech Wu Zhenglong expressed his warm welcome to the guests of the Jiangsu Culture Carnival on behalf of the provincial party committee and the provincial government, and extended heartfelt thanks to the people from all walks of life in Hong Kong who have long been concerned about supporting the development of Jiangsu.

  The governor noted that the relationship between Jiangsu and Hong Kong is profound and this year's Jiangsu Cultural Carnival showcases the beauty of culture and art of the hometown of rural music, adding that the festival will indefinitely enhance cultural exchanges and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation between the two regions so as to better benefit the people on both sides.

  This year marks the 40th anniversary of the reform and opening up, Wu said, adding that President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the 2018 annual conference of the Boao Forum for Asia and announced China’s major initiatives to expand and open up.

  This is an opportunity for the world, and it is also an opportunity for Jiangsu and an opportunity for Hong Kong, he said.

  It is hoped that by participating in the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and expanding opening up, Jiangsu and Hong Kong will be able to strengthen the cooperation to yield more fruitful results and create a better future so that the people of the two regions can share the happiness and glory of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

  In her speech, Mrs Lam said that Hong Kong and Jiangsu are closely related to each other and have close exchanges and she felt happy that the Jiangsu Cultural Carnival has been kicked off within half a year since it was proposed.

  At the Carnival, Hong Kong citizens can better appreciate the unique traditional art, exquisite cuisine and cultural products of Jiangsu which enjoys a reputation of being the land of fish and rice.

  It is hoped that both Hong Kong and Jiangsu will give full play to each other’s advantages and actively integrate into the country’s Belt and Road development to achieve mutual benefits and common development.

  Henry Tang Ying Yen, member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Chairman of the Hong Kong Association of Jiangsu Societies, addressed the opening ceremony.

  Present at the opening ceremony were Xie Feng, Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner for Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong, Qiu Hong, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong, Yang Yue, Member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee and Minister of the United Front Work Department of Jiangsu, Guo Yuanqiang, Vice Governor of the Provincial Government of Jiangsu, Chen Jiangang, Secretary General of the Provincial Government of Jiangsu and Cai Guanshen, the chairman of the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce.

  On the same day, Wu Zhenglong also visited the Hong Kong Association of Jiangsu Societies and the Hong Kong Productivity Council. He met with prominent figures from the Hong Kong business community and attended the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Provincial Government and the China Merchants Group. He also went on an inspection tour to the Hong Kong office of Zhongshan Research Co., Ltd. where he discussed with representatives of Jiangsu enterprises in Hong Kong.
