Zhangjiagang city, Jiangsu province has established a waste collection transportation disposal system. The coverage rate of the city's garbage classification facilities in 2017 was up to 76 percent which exceeded the government’s target of 60 percent, according to local authorities.

Since 2011, Zhangjiagang's government has established over 8,000 garbage classifying sites across the city and begun to set up a collection transportation system covering kitchen waste, recyclable garbage, hazardous waste, and organic perishable garbage.

Sanitation workers also participated in the classification collection to supply guidance and secondary classifications.

The city also adopted internet approaches like mobile phone applications and WeChat to recycle renewable resources to lower overall operating costs.

To date, the city has processed more than 50,000 tons of kitchen waste, 220,000 tons of recyclable garbage, 100,000 tons of hazardous waste and 10,000 tons of organic perishable garbage.

Zhangjiagang also released a plan for further garbage classification. According to the plan, which runs to 2020, the city expects the coverage rate of garbage classification facilities to reach 100 percent by that time.
