Nanjing Normal University yesterday handed out approximately 64 government scholarships to its international students. Most students received the “normal” scholarship, which is understood to be the “visiting student” scholarship; around 15 others received a bachelor scholarship and 5 students received Masters or PHD scholarships.

All scholarships were given to the students as a means of appreciation of their hard work and  as encouragement. As it stands, 279 Chinese universities have been allowed to accept international students who are on Chinese Government Scholarships.

According to The China Scholarship Council, there are 12 Chinese government scholarships, 195 university scholarships, 24 local Chinese government scholarships, one Confucius Institute scholarship and one British Council scholarship, available to international students studying in China.

The Ministry of Commerce scholarship, MOFCOM, states its intentions are to “strengthen communication and cooperation between China and other countries”. International students have been coming to study at Nanjing Normal University since 1965. It is clear that over time, the university, among other top universities in the country, has succeeded in opening its doors to international students.

Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative, which is to further strengthen relations between countries across the old maritime Silk Road, will of course be assisted by proper educational exchange programs offered by on both sides. Students receiving their scholarships from the Nanjing government yesterday ranged from countries nearer to this region and South Korea; a few other nationalities included Indonesia and a handful of Europeans.

Chinese government student grants are given partially or in full. According to the Scholarship Council, students will roughly receive ¥2,500 per month as an allowance, almost the same as the minimum wage in Nanjing which is ¥1890. However, students have (since 2014) been additionally offered the chance to work under the “work-study program”, bringing the average international student’s monthly living allowance up.

At the bottom of the list of scholarships available to international students in China, and currently vacant is the “enterprise” scholarship; one wonders when this will become available and what it will entail for international entrepreneurial drive in China.
