Mboungou Hinga Jesus Gildas, a student from Jiangsu Food and Pharmaceutical Science College (JFPC), won the popularity award at the 2017 “Shared Joy in Jiangsu” Foreigners Singing and Talent Competition in Nanjing, Jiangsu province on Dec 6, 2017.
The Congolese young man, who started dancing at the age of seven, amazed the audience with his street dance performance to win the top prize through online voting.
The popularity award is one of the most anticipated segments of the annual competition hosted by the Jiangsu Provincial Government and the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education.
Some 1,000 competitors from countries including the US, Sweden, Russia, Sri Lanka, Cape Verde, Bahamas, Guatemala and Australia participated in the eliminations, with only 150 of them making it to the finals.
Gildas said the open and easy-going atmosphere at JFPC encouraged and inspired his frequent exchanges with other dancers.
He described his living and studying at JFPC as enjoyable, noting “I even don’t want to go back to Congo”.

The multiple after-class activities, such as the traditional Chinese cooking classes, have offered him great opportunities to try his hands on preparing various dishes, such as jiaozi, wonton and zongzi, and also helped him make friends with many Chinese students and teachers.
JFPC has long placed emphases on cultivating international students and encouraged them to focus on developing both academic and artistic strength.
The students are required to spend their first year at JFPC learning Chinese and the following two years concentrating on academic studies. Experienced teachers, multitask by giving the students professional guide and instruction, and as well as inviting them to delve into Chinese culture to improve their understanding of China.
The school also organizes various themed activities such as the moon-cake-making activity held to celebrate the Mid-autumn Festival, the exploring trip to local urban planning museum, the bonfire music party, and the handmade-soap-making activity to enrich their campus life.
