Zhou Yi, a post-80s man from Suzhou, and his team created five pieces of fondant cakes in Chinese style at the Cake International competition held on Nov 5 in the United Kingdom. Their cakes, which took seven days to make, won three gold and two bronze medals. Pictures of their winning cakes were shared more than 40,000 times on the internet and received more than 70,000 likes.

The event attracted more than 1,500 entries from across the world. “The artistic design, aesthetic outlook and subtlety are admittedly key pluses to the final score, but its attribute as food cannot be overlooked,” said Zhou Yi.

The competition required that all materials used must be eatable and the cake must be soft enough to be cut apart.

During the appraisals, all judges couldn’t help but marvel at the cakes whose themes were Chinese ancient lady, Empress Wu Zetian in ancient China, and the legendary Monkey King made by Zhou Yi’s team.

"The hair on the head of Monkey King took three days to make,” said Zhou Yi, adding that “his teeth were placed one by one, and so was the hair. We only had three hours to sleep every day while preparing for the competition.”

Zhou Yi also shared his experience of making fondant cakes on his microblog. “Fondant is only moldable after it is heated in 200 C. Hands have to endure the high temperature during the molding process. Besides, cake makers must drink a lot of water because the environment must be kept highly dry by large dehumidifiers. When the dehumidifier is on, we even don’t need to go to the bathroom after drinking one ton of water.”

The themes Zhou Yi’s team chose for the match were all from traditional Chinese cultures, in a hope to promote the unique charm of traditions, said Zhou Yi.
