"I traveled 42 hours on the train to Qujing of Yunnan on January 13, 2011," Sun Ningsheng, a candidate for "Good Citizen of Nanjing", wrote in the first line of his book My Life As A Volunteer Teacher In Yunnan.
He traveled more than 2,900 km to Ciying Middle School of Ciying town in the Qilin district of Qujing, Yunnan province. He brought 20,000 books and 8,000 magazines to the school and also built a library for the students.
The 66-year-old Sun always had a dream to teach in rural areas. When Sun was working in rural areas in North Jiangsu in 1969, he suffered from starvation and local villagers provided food for Sun. Sun said if children of those who once helped him cannot go to school, then he must do something. "I will guide these students so that they can have more choices in their lives," Sun said. He promised to continue to teach in rural schools as long as his physical condition permits.
