The autumn harvest is in full swing as local farmers are getting busy reaping paddy rice and selling silkworm cocoons to add to the festive atmosphere.
Combine harvesters were running back and forth in the paddy rice fields in Jiupu town of Xuyi county to rush in the rice.
Wan Jinyou, a local farmer, is expecting to profit from the innovative rice-crayfish integrated farming which has made the crayfish cleaner and the rice tastier.
4.4 million mu of paddy rice in Huai’an city is expected to be harvested in the coming days as the local government has deployed more than 25000 sets of farming machines to ensure the smooth progress of the harvest season.
520000 mu of hybrid rice in Siyang County are being harvested and the local farmers are expecting a bumper harvest due to the improved quality of the rice variety.
In the meantime, farmers in Hai’an County have began to sell off their silkworm cocoons as is evidenced by the long queue in front of the cocoon purchasing stations.
The yield of the autumn cocoon is expected to be lower from the spring variety but its price is 1.5 yuan higher per kilo. Ma Shanzhi, a local cocoon farmer, is expected to take in more than 10000 yuan from his cocoon raising business.
Total income from the cocoon raising industry in Hai’an is expected to hit 126 million yuan this year.
