A water heritage site investigation project is currently being implemented across Jiangsu province, led by the Jiangsu Provincial Water Resources Department and the Jiangsu Provincial Bureau of Cultural Relics, according to media reports on Sept 25.
The initial investigation shows that Jiangsu has 5,302 water cultural heritage sites. Among them, there are 4,464 engineering construction sites, 279 literature sites and 559 intangible cultural heritage sites. Suzhou has the largest number of aquatic cultural heritage sites, with the 2,224 water cultural heritage sites in the city accounting for about 42 percent of the province's total. The comprehensive water heritage site investigation project in Jiangsu started in early 2017 and is the first such investigation in China.
