The 2017 China Taizhou Mei Lanfang Art Festival was kicked off Wednesday evening with 6 series of activities to be staged in the following month.

The opening ceremony at the Taizhou Grand Theater was greeted by the debut of Qing Yi, a large scale modern Peking opera show.

An oil painting exhibition in honor of Mei Lanfang was also kicked off with 50 oil paintings by Zhang Qiao to be exhibited in the following weeks until October 10.

Mei Lanfang, born in 1894 and died in 1961, was a legendary Beijing Opera figure whose career began at the age of eight and spanned fifty years until his death. During his lifetime, Mei performed over 100 different roles in the traditional Beijing Opera repertoire as a dan, or traditional female impersonator.

He was best known for his Qingyi roles, generally considered a feminine role in Chinese opera.

He was the first Chinese artist to take Peking Opera to foreign countries, making cultural exchanges with Japan, the United States, and other countries, and he forged friendships with many renowned western artists of his day, including Charlie Chaplin.

Mei’s range and incredible artistry won him a large following, both in China and abroad.
