East China’s Jiangsu province has set forth the development goals for the Jianghuai Ecological Economic Zone for the promotion of the 1+3 strategy of key functional areas in the zone.

According to the goals announced at an on-site promotion conference held recently in Huai’an city, the Jianghuai Ecological Economic Zone will play an important role in the province’s promotion of ecological conservation due to its unique geographic location.

Although the division of southern Jiangsu, central Jiangsu and northern Jiangsu has its rationality and inevitability, the north Jiangsu regions have felt embarrassed at its being the follower for the past decades.

The 1+3 strategy of key functional areas will highlight the development of the Yangtze River city cluster, the offshore Jiangsu economic belt, the Jianghuai Ecological Economic Zone and the Xuzhou Huaihai Economic Zone.

The Yangtze River city cluster will attach importance to the development of clustering and integration to serve as the driving force behind the province’s economic growth.

The offshore Jiangsu areas will give full play to the development of the marine economy to pave the way for the emergence of a new growth engine.

The Huaihai Economic Zone will strive to boost the development of the central cities for in-depth growth while the Jianghuai Ecological Economic Zone will pinpoint ecological conservation for sustained growth.

The Jianghuai Ecological Economic Zone should bring into full play its unique geographical position and role to give a strong boost to ecological conservation so as to optimize the development path and model for the attraction of high-quality resources and high-end elements to turn the economic zone into a hotbed for economic development, said Li Qiang, secretary of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee during his inspection tour in Huai’an city on Friday.

The Jianghuai Ecological Economic Zone encompasses two prefectural cities and five counties with a combined water area of 5585 square meters, which account for one third of the provincial total, and a wetland area of 5652 square meters, which account for half of the total wetlands in the north of the province.

The intensity of land development in the Jianghuai Ecological Economic Zone is much lower than the provincial average with Huai’an, Suqian and Yancheng standing at 17% on the average, compared with 20% for the international standards for livable cities.
