Suzhou has enjoyed its good reputation as the “Home of Silk” since ancient times.
An 18-member group of foreign envoys to China and their wives visited Suzhou's Wujiang district on Aug. 12 and 13 to experience Suzhou’s profound silk cultural heritage and charm.
After watching a silk qipao fashion show at Cheongsam Town in Wujiang, the foreign envoys’ wives also put on qipao dresses and walked the catwalk.
At the Taihuxue Sericulture Cultural Park, the guests watched the whole process of silk production, from silkworm and cocoon to the final exquisite silk products, and even personally tried some processes, including silk-making, tie-dyeing and embroidery.
Rosanna Brathwaite, head of the group, who is the wife of Barbados' ambassador to China and chairwoman of the Commonwealth Association, said that she had read some books on China’s silk culture, but this time, she really felt its charm by being onsite. Members of the group also expressed their willingness to promote Wujiang’s silk and Chinese silk culture in the future.
