  • The pale and budding Magnolia Lamps are a symbolic element on Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge. On November 21st, light fog embraced Yangtze River at dusk. It’s the first trial illumination of Magnolia lamps after the overhauling of the bridge, to light up the to-be opened bridge that is 4,000 meters in length.

  • From the bridge, hundreds of Magnolia Lamps are built close to the rails and they stand on the two sides, which seem orderly and splendid. The Yangtze River Bridge in the night is overspread by these warm “lights of stars.” The Magnolia Lamps are “Electrified Antiques” instead of the ordinary street lamps. They are as old as Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge that had been joined up completely in 1968, and they have been illuminating for the pedestrians and cars moving back and forth between north and south for 50 years.
  • Chun Qing, the person in charge of cultural relics preservation for the bridge, also famous as the associate professor in Southeast University, School of Architecture, made an introduction to media; a Magnolia Lamp is about eight meters high, and over 700 kilograms in “weight”. Five Magnolia lanterns are placed on the lamp bracket of each lampstand. Back to the time when the bridge was firstly built up, there were 150 pairs, amounting to 300 Magnolia-shaped lamps on the bridge. Then, one lamp was dismantled while building up the ramp bridge. Therefore, before the closed maintenance for the bridge, there were 299 lamps that resembled the “honor guards”. Each of them kept a distance of 40 meters or so, and they are orderly located at the bridge, somewhere like the southern and northern bridge approach, main bridge or the turning corner.
  • To achieve the double requirements—maintenance and illumination, the designers have taken a lot of consideration on the “honor guards” which have been serving for 50 years. After the transformation, the brand-new Magnolia Lamps just take one fifth of electricity consumption compared with the old ones. That is to say, 80% power saving has been fulfilled.
  • On 21st, the staff on the scene introduced that there had been a designing plan before—“making a window” on the lampshade. However, they had to give it up to maintain the old appearance of these cultural relics. Eventually the solution is to inlay a LED light into the cornice of a lamp holder. As a result, not only the appearance of Magnolia lamp is kept, but also the electricity consumption is greatly saved.
  • “Before, one old Magnolia Lamp consumed about 750 watts. Now the number is 156 watts, which is one fifth of the past. The lights are also more intensive. In the past, most of them would scatter into the night.” The staff said.
  • Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is the first bridge on the river with two-tier railway bridge and highway bridge achieving the dual purposes, designed and built by Chinese. At 10pm, October 28th, 2016, the closed overhauling was carried on the bridge which then lasted for 27 months. This is the first time of completely closed overhauling for the bridge since it was opened in 1968. After the repair, the bridge will reopen in the end of this year with a whole new look.
