Water pollutants released by ships in the northern Jiangsu section of the Grand Canal has been collected for centralized treatment, indicating a new stage in the cleanup of pollutants in China’s longest artificial watercourse.

In the morning, Liang Yuexing, who has 18 years of experience in boating, used the "Boat E-line" mobile app to dispose of household waste in the intelligent garbage collection bin located at the Huai'an anchorage.

“We used to throw garbage into the river, but now we all go ashore and put it in the garbage collection bin. This time, 0.78 kilograms of garbage were disposed of. We strongly support this approach because it can improve the environment and our lives,” said Liang Yuexing, a boatman.

Huai'an Anchorage, one of the 13 public receiving points for ship water pollutants in the northern Jiangsu section of the Beijing Hangzhou Canal, has collected nearly 18 tons of domestic garbage as of the end of October with 11 cubic meters of oily sewage and 20 cubic meters of domestic sewage extracted.

“We have implemented closed-loop management of the collected household waste, oil wastewater, and domestic sewage to avoid secondary pollution of the river,” said Zang Yukun, Aviation Administrator, Huai'an Navigation Center, Huai'an Aviation Administration Management Brigade.

The 475-kilometer northern section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is one of the busiest waterways of the Jiangsusection of the Greand Canal, with a daily traffic volume of 2000 ships.
