  • Xuzhou city in east China’s Jiangsu Province became the first destination of President Xi’s inspection tour outside Beijing after the 19th CPC National Congress. He went to Mazhuang village on December 12th, 2017 and spent 30 RMB (about 4.6 USD) on a hand-made sachet. Xi’s purchase instantly made the sachets in this villages viral. On January 16th, 2018, journalists of Jiangsu’s media organizations went to Mazhuang village. The picture shows that villagers sew sachets to meet the on-going demand. (Feng Jintong/ourjiangsu.com)
  • This is the sachet that President Xi bought. It’s called Zhenbang or Needle Stick. Wang Xiuying, the inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage, said Zhenbang was originated from a cloth container to put needles. Later she changed the container to a long sachet; and that became today’s Needle Stick. During Xi’s inspection, he asked Wang: “How much is the sachet? I’ll buy one to support.” Wang replied: “I will give you for free as a gift.” Xi insisted on paying 30 RMB.
  • The raw materials for making sachets include cloth, dry herbs, cardboard, and cotton. The inner fittings are made of a mixture of dozens of dry herbs, very useful for repelling mosquitos and preventing flu. The pictures show the customized lavender sachets.
  • Step 1: sprinkle the dry herb power over the cloth.
  • Step 2: support the cotton with cardboards.
  • Step 3: sew the powder, cotton and cardboard together.
  • Step 4: Press the margins and embroider.
  • Step 5: Sew belt and buckle to the main body.
  • 5 steps to make the sachet may seem to be effortless. However, Ms. Zhang, one of the villagers said it is very time-consuming if you want to make it perfect. One sachet like this usually takes 40 minutes. One person can only make a dozen at most in a day.
  • According to the villagers, the sachets don’t have a very huge market in the past. Vendors have to sell ice-creams and drinks to compensate the lost. But after President Xi’s purchase, the demand of the sachets surges.
  • Now, the annual sales of sachets in Mazhuang village hit 20 million RMB (about 3.1 million USD), offering job opportunities for about 200 local villagers.
  • Mazhuang village is currently planning on building a “sachet production base”, which is expected to cover an area of 2,000 ㎡. It will attract people from neighboring villages and counties to work here.
